2048 guide: a strategy to reach 2048 (and beyond)
In 2048 the winner isn’t the fastest thinker but the one who keeps the board in order. This guide explains the method that players who almost always reach 2048 use, and how to adapt it to each Vexply board and mode.
Play 20481. Pick a corner and never let go
Everything starts with deciding where your biggest tile will live. Pick a corner (say, bottom left) and play so that tile never leaves it.
To do that, use almost only two directions: toward the corner (down and left in the example). The third direction (right) is your emergency move, and the fourth (up) is the one to avoid: it’s the one that usually drags the big tile out of the corner.
2. Build an ordered staircase
Next to the big tile, along the same edge, place the next ones from high to low: 512, 256, 128, 64… Then, when a fitting tile shows up, merges chain on their own toward the corner.
Keep that row full at all times. If the staircase row has a gap, a new tile (a 2) can fall into it and break the sequence.
- Bottom row: 1024 · 512 · 256 · 128
- Row above: the small tiles you’re preparing
- Never leave gaps in the staircase row
3. What to do when the board locks up
Sooner or later the board fills up with small tiles. Don’t panic and move at random: first look for a merge that frees space without moving the staircase row.
If you must use the forbidden direction, do it while the bottom row is full, so the big tile stays put. Then go straight back to your two usual directions.
4. Each board plays differently
On 4×4 the corner strategy works as is. On 5×5 and 6×6 there’s so much room that the risk is getting messy: build the staircase anyway, but as a “snake” that climbs into the second row once the first is complete.
On 3×3 there’s no room for a long staircase; there the realistic goal is your score, not the 2048 tile. Go for big merges and don’t waste moves.
5. Time mode and Zen mode
Time mode gives you 2 minutes. The corner strategy still helps, but play faster and accept a little mess: every merge scores, and score is all that counts.
Zen mode never ends, which makes it the best place to practice the staircase without pressure. And if you turn on Undo, remember that game counts as practice and won’t save records.
